Citing concerns over New Orleans' economy, Mayor Ray Nagin has proposed creating a downtown casino district.

Nagin emphasized the dire straits of the city's economy. He included his idea for expanding gambling in a letter send to Gov. Kathleen Blanco. He also asked for the authority to create a citywide charter public school district.

Nagin said ideas like this are needed to get the cash-strapped city back on its feet.

Each night, the brightest spotlight in the world shines straight into the Nevada sky from the top of the black pyramid of the Luxor. With the Egyptian-themed hotel-casino´s location near the southern end of the Strip, the ray acts as a great landmark. But in the spring, the light also attracts hundreds of thousands of moths, an insect cloud reminiscent of three of the 10 Biblical plagues that befell the ancient Nile River country.

Hurricane Katrina & Casinos Industry

Mississippi's Gulf Coast riverboats -- once the symbol of a revitalized economy -- became the most visible signs of the region's destruction after Hurricane Katrina tossed the floating casinos, shattered and lifeless, ashore like so many toy boats.

It wasn't until detailed video footage of the storm's wake was aired Tuesday that business reporters realized this wasn't going to be a typical "lost earnings per share" story.

The wreckage of Hurricane Katrina is already being called the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, with witnesses comparing the decimated landscape of floating bodies and trash-strewn shores to the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima and war-torn Iraq.

Legalizing casino gambling

The Greater Cleveland Partnership today released a study that estimates that legalizing casino gambling, and building 11 casinos around the state, would add between $3.8 billion and $4 billion in new revenue to the states economic output.

But the Partnership stopped well short of committing the business organization to any effort to bring gambling to the state.

"We don't know enough yet to draw any conclusions about whether or not the Partnership will support an effort to legalize gambling", said Partnership president Joe Roman. "I don't have a personal opinion; I don't have a professional opinion".

Gamblers have always been preoccupied with getting an edge when playing casino games as if some strategy to tip the scale in favor of the players really existed.
With the exception of expert card counting in blackjack, expert strategy when playing select video poker games, dice control technique at craps and expert play in live poker rooms, the mathematical advantage built in to all other games guarantees the casino will always have the edge over players.
